Effects of the El Niño Phenomenon Begin to Be Felt in Colombia

7.12.2018

The effects of the El Niño Phenomenon have begun to be felt and threaten to reduce rainfall by 80% in the first quarter of 2019, which could lead to water shortages said Environment Minister Ricardo Lozano.

From the second semester of 2015 until April 2016 the South American country suffered the consequences of this climatic phenomenon that was characterised by high temperatures, droughts and a decrease in the flow of rivers and reservoirs.

Colombia was on the verge of electric power rationing and there were power cuts in some aqueducts.

El Niño is a climatic phenomenon related to the warming of the Pacific Ocean and in Colombia it causes droughts and high temperatures.

This climatic condition could also affect key sectors of the fourth largest economy in Latin America, such as the production of bananas among other products.

Lozano admitted the possibility of El Niño extending beyond the first quarter, with below average rains so he urged people to start saving water.
