Strategic Alliance Calls for Reconsideration of Contract with Banapiña

30.11.2018

Strategic Alliance has rejected the Banapiña contract.  A group of advisors from the National Strategic Alliance requested reconsideration of the contract signed between the Panamanian State and Banapiña, a subsidiary of Del Monte, which allows the exploitation of a banana concession in the province of Chiriquí, in the land that was destined for banana farms.

Arnoldo Videla and Gisela Pérez Polo, on behalf of the National Strategic Alliance, expressed to the press their disagreement with the violent way in which the established producers are being removed from the area.

Videla also questioned the legality of the contract itself, because he thinks that it includes several clauses that override national laws and the Political Constitution of the Republic, so the contract should be revised.

They argue that despite what the contract-law says, these small producers (which previously numbered 800 but because of pressure from the State have decreased to only 200) have possession rights over these lands so they cannot be consider invaders as the government called them.

The company Banapiña, beneficiary of a 20 year concession granted by the National Government through a contract-law started last June the production of bananas in the first 650 hectares.

At that time, about 1,800 banana seedlings were planted, which are expected to be in production in February of next year.
