Ecuador: Project Analysing the Variations of a Fungus Species Wins Biotechnology Congress

9.11.2018

Ángel Cedeño, graduate of the State Technical University of Quevedo (UTEQ), won the first place in the IV International Congress of Biotechnology and Biodiversity CIBB 2018, organized by the Espol (Polytechnic University of the Coast) and the Association of Banana Exporters of the Ecuador (AEBE), which took place in last week of October in Guayaquil.

The objective was to analyse the genetic variations of a fungus species that causes diseases, with 26 isolated from nine cocoa producing areas of Ecuador and evaluate the progress of the infection.

The test intends to obtain bacteria of potential commercial application that allow a reduction in the use of fungicidal products for soil improvement and protection of the environment and in the future to obtain a platform focused on the biological control of nematodes and phytopathogenic fungi, which will contribute to the development of a sustainable agronomy in the cultivation of cocoa and banana.

The congress was attended by more than 100 speakers, including representatives of national universities such as the Polytechnic School of the Litoral, State Technical University of Quevedo, University of Guayaquil, University San Francisco de Quito, among others and universities from Colombia, Mexico, Belgium, Cuba, the United States and Brazil.
