15.6.2018

Honduras has exported some 30,000 containers of bananas that have generated more than US$ 523 million in foreign currency so far this year.

Mauricio Guevara, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) said that the activity of the fruit sector is keeping steady.

"The idea is to expand some areas and increase productivity, I feel that this is our commitment through technology and improving basic practices in export crops," he said.

Investment in the sector cannot be ignored, for that reason an integrated model in which small producers receive technical assistance and technology so that they can sell their products will be implemented, the official said.

Revenues from banana exports in 2017 were 2.7% higher than those registered in 2016, the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH) reported.

Product sales increased by US $ 13.7 million compared to 2016. The United States and Ireland were the main markets for Honduran bananas in 2017.  In 2017, bananas became the second agricultural export product in the country.
