Mexico Aiming at Exporting Bananas to China

Authorities from the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) and the Chinese Ministry of General Administration of Customs and Health visited a banana plantation in Mexico, advancing the relationship for exporting this fruit to the Asian country.

With these actions, established in a work agenda the authorities of Mexico and the People's Republic of China strengthened their ties of cooperation and commercial exchange of agri food products as part of the new relationship promoted by the presidents of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto and Xi Jinping, from China.

During a tour to agro company "Bananas de México", located on the limits of Tabasco and Chiapas the general coordinator of International Affairs of SAGARPA, Raúl Urteaga Trani and the Vice Minister of Customs of China, Wang Lingjun verified the processes of banana production and processing in one of the national production units that has obtained the Global GAP certificate allowing them to export to the countries of the European Union.

Both delegations toured the farms of a thousand hectares of crops, processing and packing areas, with a capacity to produce about 55,000 19 kilos boxes of bananas per week of which 30% are sold in Belgium, Monte Negro, Spain and the Netherlands, as well as New Zealand and South Korea.

During the event, visitors were shown a natural water reservoir that feeds the irrigation canals through a process in the irrigation plant as well as witnessing the field activities in the care and selection of the plants and the fruits, the areas of postharvest, washing, and packing, tasks that allow the generation of more than 500 direct jobs.

Raúl Urteaga Trani affirmed that the four-day visit to Mexico by the Chinese authorities reaffirms the commitment to work together with the aim of strengthening cooperation ties to increasingly boost agri-food trade between both nations and increase banana exports.

The Vice Minister of Customs of China, Wang Lingjun, highlighted the discipline and professionalism in the work of the plant, the care of its processes that guarantee a quality product, the tour included the entire production chain.
