Banana Producers ask the EU to Continue with the Agricultural Aid

25.5.2018

Canarian banana Producers have asked the EU not take the agricultural aid out of European Union budgets. The representatives of the Banana and Plantain Producers Association (APEB) met on May 24th in Paris to "review and review" the latest actions developed at European level with the European Commission against the budgets that govern the Community Program of Support for Agricultural Productions (Posei).

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Primary Sector of the Canary Islands Government, Abel Morales, as well as a representation of the Regional Executive in Brussels, with the aim of showing the steps that the sector has taken in recent months, and intensified in the last weeks on the occasion of the negotiations on the future 2021-2027 multiannual financial framework of the European Union which in the view of the sector has insufficient perspectives for the needs of the agricultural sector of the outermost regions (RUP), the Banana Producers Association of Canarias (Asprocan).

The community banana producers have insisted on the importance of the specific needs of the ORs, the social and economic implications of the agricultural activity in the Islands and have reminded the European Commission itself of the conclusions of the latest impact reports on the suitability and necessity of the Posei, as well as, in fact, its current deficit situation given the need for state aid that complements it. It is expected that by the end of this month the European Commission will make public the first proposal of budgets, after an initial orientation of cutting. For this reason the APEB has intensified contact with the presidency of the European Commission with the aim of asserting the public and institutional commitment offered by President Jean-Claude Juncker in French Guiana to continue with the Posei programs for agriculture and his target of not reducing them or correcting them downwards.
