Panama: Álvaro Alemán accused over Delays in Paying Land Yenants in Barú

18.5.2018

A group of land tenants of the former banana plantations in the Barú district of Chiriqui province accuse the Minister of the Presidency, Álvaro Alemán of being responsible for the delay in the payment for the lease of their lands because he did not go to the Budget Committee of the National Assembly to request the extraordinary loan of US$ 9.3 million to make the payments, confirmed Eduardo Caballero, legal representative of those affected.

"The only person responsible for the delay in paying for the land lease is the Minister of the Presidency, generating concern and annoyance among those affected since at this time there is no communication with the national authorities that are handling this issue," says Caballero.

He affirmed that the company Del Monte deposited on February 21st US$ 10 million to the state funds to pay them for the lease through the government but they have not received any money to date.

Caballero says that the Minister of the Presidency, Álvaro Alemán did not attend the Budget Committee of the Assembly on April 25th where he was summoned to request the extraordinary loan to pay, citing the excuse that he had to travel to Chiriqui to participate in the inauguration of a government building giving little importance to the Barú. issue.

The lawyer confirmed that by Saturday May 19th there will be a general assembly of more than 800 people affected by the payment in the district of Barú, where it will be decided what pressure measures will be taken to force the government to pay them.

Currently the Banapiña company of Panama, works on the adaptation of the land in 970 hectares of the 4,000 that are scheduled to be put to work that the State granted them in leasing through Law 488.

It is expected that by the end of May, the planting of banana seedlings will begin, with a view to reactivating the activity with an investment that exceeds US$ 100 million over a period of seven years.
