Koper Port Delivers First Reefer Containers by Rail

13.4.2018

Koper port container terminal has started delivering Israeli goods in reefer containers by rail to northern Europe.

The project, which aims to find innovative solutions for the transport of can-perishable goods, also included the mentioned train. For the transport of freight containers, we first used new equipment and technology, which was only tested for passenger coaches at the moment. Instead of conventional diesel engines that are fitted to frigo containers and supply them with power, we loaded the containers onto brand new wagons that were interconnected and received electricity directly from the locomotive, network. In this way, the cargo in the reefer of containers ensured adequate temperature and climatic conditions throughout the transport route, even up to -18°C.

Wagons are primarily intended for the transportation of container frigos, but we can also load ordinary containers and truck trailers with containers.

The Fresh Food Corridors project was launched at the end of 2015 and is under the auspices of CEF (Connecting Europe Facility). It has joined 20 partners from Italy, France, Cyprus, Slovenia and Israel, and is coordinated by Luka Koper. The Action is part of a Global Project whose objective is to achieve a safe, sustainable and efficient fresh food transport system in the Euro-Mediterranean area through the long-term effective and sustainable connection between the Trans-Mediterranean Transport Network (TMT-T) and the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) of which MoS represent the maritime dimension.

Already last year, partners in the Fresh Food Corridors project have proven that the transport of high-speed goods through three Mediterranean ports and further into Northern Europe by train can be more competitive and more efficient compared to road transport, which is still the most common form of freight transport of containers today.
