New Contract for Ecuadorian Banana Growers

13.4.2018

The Labour Minister of Ecuador, Raúl Ledesma signed new contracts that adjust the total number of hours for the working day for four economic industries, including banana.

In the new contracts payment can be daily or even weekly, as agreed by the parties. The worker, in addition, will have the possibility of working for another employer. The contracts will have an increase of 15% compared to the value currently paid.

These instruments will enter into force after their publication in the Official Registry, which should be before next month, informed Ledesma.

The contract for the banana industry will be for 36 hours per week, distributed over six days per week, provided that it does not exceed eight hours per day.

According to Richard Salazar, administrator of the Banana Marketing and Export Association (Acorbanec), this will make it possible to know the reality of the farm workers.

"There are crews that are hired on a fixed basis, with full salary and benefits of law, but who work four days a week," explained the representative. With the entry into force of this new form of contract, workers may offer their services formally to different companies, Salazar said. He added that for the banana sector it is important that the new contracts enter into force with a regulation that refers to Social Security, so that the payments and benefits are proportional to the work done.
