Mexico: Chiapas Leader in Banana Exports

23.3.2018

Chiapas occupies the first place in the export of bananas in Mexico, followed by Tabasco and in third place the state of Colima.

The president of the Soconusco Plantain Association, Eduardo Altúzar López, informed that they are exporting to the West Coast of the United States, Russia and the Netherlands through banana Mexico, as well as other producers that send to Japan.

Regarding the shipment of bananas, he said that 220 weekly containers are sent, equivalent to 12 million boxes per year.

"We have not had growth for three years, the development in production has not been able to grow, we hope that by 2019 we can achieve an increase of 5% in exports, so we trust that the following year China-Mexico protocol will be finalized to have an alternative in the Asian markets."

Altúzar López, said that the natural market is all of Asia, so we hope that the other producers not only of bananas, but of tropical fruits will consolidate loads in the Port and we will be able to access Asian markets and improve the economic situation.

He said that in the Soconusco alone, in the social sector, there are 14,000 hectares of plantain, of which 10,000 are exporting and 4,000 are in process.

Finally, he said that they expect that by 2019, they will have a second shipping company to be able to send to other destinations.
