Chlordecone: Caribbean Workers Want Support

16.3.2018

Farm workers in the FWI want to take into account the diseases linked to their exposure to chlordecone. This is what they said on March 10, 2018 during a press conference at the Union House in Fort-de-France.

CGTM of Martinique and CGTG of Guadeloupe were gathered to expose the same claims in the presence of a doctor who began to prescribe Chlordecone exams to people with cancer.

From 1972 to 1993 - four years after Chlordecone was banned in mainland France - the banana workers of Guadeloupe and Martinique were still using the chemical, under the orders of their bosses.

Chlordecone is a very toxic insecticide. The CGTG and the CGTM have filed a complaint so that the victims (many of whom have developed cancers) are compensated. And have requested for a systematic medical follow-up.
