14.5.2021

Through the Association of Banana Growers of Colombia -Augura, the banana sector reported effects on 33% of its exports due to blockades of the previous days in Turbo since the fruit could not leave the farms towards the port.

In four days, 773,200 boxes of the fruit stopped from being exported; that is, more than 15,000 tons of fruit were wasted.

Augura celebrated that after almost five days of closures and demonstrations on the road to Urabá, the blockade that prevented transit in Turbo was lifted.

The mayor of Turbo, Felipe Maturana, indicated several commitments made to lift the protests of the different economic sectors in the region.

"We reached an agreement with the young people who were protesting; from this moment the road is open, thanks to the ombudsman for his support, to the Catholic Church as well, for reaching these agreements," said the local president.

The opening came after a meeting of the mayors of Apartadó, Carepa, Chigorodó and Turbo with the protesters, the Ombudsman's Office, and representatives of church La Pastoral Social.
