Colombia Supervises the Health of Plantain and Banana Crops in Bolívar

14.5.2021

Inspection and phytosanitary control visits were made to plantain and banana crops to protect plant health and located in backyard lands in the department of Bolívar.

The activities were carried out in the municipalities of Córdoba and Zambrano, where there is official control of diseases and monitoring activities of other quarantine pests of Musaceae.

The resolution establishing phytosanitary measures to prevent the spread of the moko disease in bananas and plantains in the national territory was also socialized. The condition is caused by the bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum Filetype II.

Cristóbal Monterrosa Mosquera, sectional manager of the ICA in Bolívar, indicated that “with these activities, carried out by the ICA team permanently, the pests of official control in the different agricultural species are kept under surveillance. The main pests that affect plantain and banana cultivation are monitored as a method of preventing Fusarium TR4, moko and elephantiasis in the region”.

Phytosanitary plans

For this reason, work plans on quarantine pests and economic importance are being implemented to keep the phytosanitary status of the country updated.

Monterrosa also stated: “Since the previous year, a monitoring plan has been enforced, with which specific surveillance and inspections are carried out on banana plantations and which defined some lands as sensor properties to carry out phytosanitary evaluations and biweekly surveillances”.
