Ecuador: Ministry of Internal Affairs and Contecon Sign Cooperation Agreement

9.4.2021

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ecuador Gabriel Martínez, and the general manager of the Port of Contecon in Guayaquil, Juan Contreras, signed a cooperation agreement.

This agreement will benefit the National Anti-Narcotics Directorate of the National Police, which operates in the facilities of the maritime terminal.  The main objective of the agreement is that the Special Units of the National Anti-Drug Investigation Directorate have the facilities and support of the port entity.  Facilities to carry out the tasks of surveillance, interdiction, inspection and control of anti-narcotics and illicit substances in that Port, which is in the south of Guayaquil and with the largest international export traffic.

The minister highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration and pointed out that this collaboration should not only be limited to investment issues or commercial or business activities, but also security.

The minister also stressed that a few days ago an agreement was signed with the United States to reinforce port security and that in a few weeks a regulation will be issued to allow the country to have non-intrusive systems for the inspection of containers.
