Ecuador: Agrocalidad Reinforces TR4 Prevention Actions

9.4.2021

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) of Ecuador, through the Agency for Regulation and Control of Phytosanitary and Zoosanitary (Agrocalidad), has received an alert for a possible presence in a South American country -although there is no official confirmation- and it is necessary to reinforce specific actions to prevent the entry of the pest in Ecuador. The Agency has developed 11 specific technical standards that focus on the exclusion, suppression, and eradication of the pest if it occurs in the country; one of these is the updated contingency plan in December 2020.

The Ministry requested citizens inform the Agency of signs associated with the plague in their crops to a telephone number or by an email to vigilance.fitosanitaria@agrocalidad.gob.ec; comunicacion@agrocalidad.gob.ec through the AGROMÓVIL application or by going to the nearest Agrocalidad office nationwide.

Given these events, Xavier Lazo Guerrero, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, said that "as the National Government, we will be firm in protecting our territory against this plague and taking care of our production."

The work is focused on reinforcing the internal control points and the Binational Border Attention Centers (CEBAF), as well as mobilizing the campers to strategic issues that will establish epidemiological fences, with the support of technicians from the Phytosanitary Project (PROFIT) in coordination with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

Also, Agrocalidad is supervising the implementation of disinfection arcs by the decentralized autonomous governments and other institutions to strengthen surveillance in the territory; The analysis of the collected samples will be prioritized in the event of any suspicion.

Patricio Almeida, Executive Director of the Agency, stated that "in Ecuador, we are prepared and activated, so we need to continue with the public and private measures that we have been executing up to now. We are sure that all producers related to the chain will get involved to practice the actions that ensure our status. We will spare no effort or action".

The Agency will remain vigilant in the face of this possible alert to support the application of measures to prevent the entry of the pest, for which we ask the public to stay informed through the official channels of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and Agrocalidad, remembering that the commitment of the sector is vital for the prevention of the entry of this pest, through compliance with the established biosecurity measures.
