Bolivia Increases Banana Exports to Argentina

18.12.2020

Ecuadorian banana exporters have reduced the shipment of the fruit to Argentina.

Bolivian producers took advantage of the situation, having increased sales to that country by 35 per cent; the price also rose from $ 2.80 to $ 3.40 per box.

The representative of the banana producers, Agustín Conde, indicated that last month, two tropical storms damaged the banana crops of Honduras and Guatemala, which mainly exported the fruit to the United States. As a consequence, the orders of multinationals in the Ecuador spot market increased, which also reduced the quantities for Argentina, as announced by the Bolivian press. Argentina then began to request more bananas from Bolivia, and this situation is taken advantage of by Bolivian producers, who increased their sales and improved their prices. Conde explained this was an awful year for banana producers due to the coronavirus pandemic, which further contracted the Argentine market. However, he says the sector now hopes to recoup its losses.

Currently, Bolivian producers send 1,900 tons of bananas per week to Argentina while last month they were sending only 1,400 tons. In the first half of 2020, the economic crisis aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic caused the Argentine market to decrease the purchase of national bananas by approximately 70 per cent, and an economic loss of 21 million dollars was calculated.

In 2019, banana exports fell by 10 per cent in value and 8 per cent in volume compared to 2018.

In 2019, a value of 29 million dollars was exported for 118 million kilos, but in 2018 the figure was 33 million dollars for 128 million kilos, according to INE data.

In the first half of 2020, the figure remained with a 10 per cent drop in value.
