Mexico: UPM's New Line Service Facilitates Agro-Commerce With Europe

27.11.2020

On September 16, the first trial vessel for the "Express Sea Route" service sailed from the Mexican port of Veracruz, a maritime route promoted by the United Producers of Mexico (UPM) company that allows agro-exporters from the American country to reach the European market with a transit time of only 12 days to the port of Rotterdam, Holland.

Lia Bijnsdorp, general director of UPM, commented that, unlike other Latin American countries, Mexico does not have a regular and direct maritime route that connects it with Europe, despite being one of the main agro-exporting nations worldwide in products such as avocado and lemon, among others. Thus, after the first voyage, Mexico will have this biweekly service from January 2021, saving between 10 and up to 15 days of navigation.

Among the advantages observed by the directive with this route is the specialization of the Greensea Company, which is part of the Seatrade group based in Antwerp, Belgium,

Lia Bijnsdorp reported that for the first ship that left Veracruz, the products were transported in refrigerated trucks to the Friopuerto warehouse and, once the ship was positioned at the dock operated by the CICE Group, they were also transported in refrigerated trucks to the ship's side and then stowed in the ship's holds. Upon arriving in Rotterdam, they were unloaded and transferred directly to the warehouse that is alongside the ship.

To implement the "Express Sea Route" there will be 5 ships that will be making the circuit sailing from Rotterdam to Cuba, also transporting dry and refrigerated cargo with mostly Dutch, dairy and derivative products. From there they will sail 2 days to Veracruz and will depart directly to Rotterdam again with the Mexican products.

Regarding Dutch company UPM, Lia Bijnsdorp explained that it is dedicated to communicating Mexican exporters with European buyers, for which it carries out research, trade missions, business meetings and procedures in terms of certifications and documentation for greater commercial facilitation, among other activities.
