3.7.2020

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands have completed the payment of 141 million corresponding to banana producers with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

In a statement, the Ministry has reported that it has made the last outstanding payment, of 71 million euros, assigned to banana producers with PGI certification, according to the Community Program for Support for Canary Islands Agricultural Productions (POSEI). This grant is financed by the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (EAGF) and corresponds to the year 2019.

Some 7,700 banana producers in the Archipelago will access these grants. The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Alicia Vanoostende, explains that this grant aims to "keep this crop on the islands, reinforcing its structure through producer organizations that promote a quality product, differentiated, committed to the environment, that creates landscape and that is competitive. "

Vanoostende emphasized the difficulties in granting such aid given the state of emergency, and the change in personnel that occurred during these months.

She also thanked the commitment and the great work carried out by the personnel of the Ministry.
