Honduras: Government Announces Meeting with Chiquita Executives

3.7.2020

The presidential representative and head of the Secretariat for Economic Development (SDE), María Antonia Rivera, announced that they would seek a meeting with Chiquita Brands executives to talk about their logistics operations in Honduras after the company closed them in Puerto Cortés on June 30, moving it to the private Cobigua pier in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala.

Chiquita was estimated to handle about 28,000 containers of goods and fruit per year.

However, because of discrepancies in tariffs and charges, high energy costs, and ground freight fares, they would have decided to leave Puerto Cortés.

The representative declared to the media that the transnational company has not fully closed operations in Honduras.

"Last week, we contacted the port manager and asked him along with the director of the SAPP (Superintendency of Private-Public Partnerships), Leo Castejón, to give us a report," she revealed.

She added: "We were informed that the American multinational will continue to work in Honduras but it has its logistics strategy; to have a clear picture of the situation, we are going to meet with them together with the Investment Minister to see if there is something else that we could offer to retain their logistic business."

When asked about whether Guatemala is offering better conditions, she replied that "I will proudly say that Puerto Cortes is the best port in Central America, so in terms of competitiveness and modernization Puerto Cortés is the best."
