Peru Increases Exports of Organic Bananas to Europe

15.5.2020

With the execution of the innovation project on agronomic management promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), farmers from the Association of Productores de Oro Verde del Chira, Piura region, improved the export levels of organic bananas with genetic quality, placing more than 1,400 tons in the markets of the Netherlands and Germany.

The innovation project, which received financing of more than 230 thousand soles through the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA), also allowed the commercialization of this crop to increase to more than 2430 tons in the national market.

To achieve this, INIA financed technology transfer on agronomic management for the crop, promoting international internships in Ecuador, technical assistance, organic certification management and Global G.A.P, actions that were carried out by the National Program for Agricultural Innovation.

This allowed establishing protocols for technical and organic management of the crop, harvesting techniques, packaging and the application of good agricultural practices, managing to increase production to 32 thousand kilos per hectare, and reduce the loss from 20% to 15% on average.

At the end of the project, the farmers of the association have strengthened their knowledge in techniques of separating the suckers, defoliation, irrigation, weeding, phytosanitary management and bunch care. They also use organic fertilizers like compost and irrigation water is managed by gravity through furrows.
