Mexico: Banana Exports to China Increase

3.4.2020

The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, stressed that the new market in China is the result of the preventive phytosanitary work of the producers, so the Government of Mexico will continue supporting them to incorporate more and more farmers, especially the small ones.

He indicated that Mexico through the National Service of Health, Safety and Agro-Food Quality (Senasica) will monitor exact and punctual compliance, so that the volume of exports increases.

He specified that in this first export shipment 39 tonnes of bananas, 20 tonnes came from a packing plant in Tabasco with a Teapa product, while another packing plant from Colima sent19 tons of fruit from Mazatán, Chiapas.

The chief director of Senasica, Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga, pointed out that all the farms that will begin to export to China are endorsed as pest free sites and have good agricultural practices certification, so the Agriculture agency issued a certificate that physically accompanies the shipment to demonstrate compliance with the conditions agreed by both governments.

On May 13, 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture and the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (AGA) signed the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the export of bananas from Mexico to China.

On December 16, 2019, the AGA published on its website the production sites and establishments authorized to start the banana exports from the states of Colima, Chiapas and Tabasco, to China.

AGA approved 37 moko-free production sites (22 in Chiapas, 14 in Colima and one in Tabasco); with an extension of 4,767.28 hectares of bananas (three 3,025 in Chiapas, one 1,520 in Colima and 222 in Tabasco), as well as 49 packing houses (17 in Colima, four in Tabasco and 28 in Chiapas).

According to figures from the Banana Product System, Mexico is the 12th world producer of the fruit with 2.7 million tons annually, 30% of that production goes to 43 markets, with an estimated value of US$ 270 million.
