Ecuador: Software Will Allow Cross Checking of Phytosanitary Data to Prevent TR4

13.12.2019

The implementation of software called SaniBanano is one of the strategies that the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), together with the Agency for Regulation and Phytosanitary Control (Agrocality), proposes applying from 2020 to prevent the Fusarium pest breed 4 from arriving in Ecuador.

About SaniBanano, Xavier Lazo, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, explained that the platform will allow information on farm control to be cross checked against phytosanitary alerts for the disease, as well as other services for farmers.

Additionally, Minister Lazo indicated that Ecuador is about to confirm its adherence to the Regional International Agency for Agricultural Health (Oirsa) and, in turn, to the Race 4 command of that entity, based in El Salvador. The member states are Mexico, Belize (incorporated in 1996), Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic (incorporated in 2003).

The research is also part of the Ministry and Agrocality's strategy to contain the banana plague outside the country. Lazo said that in a short time they will begin to analyse lines of investigation of possible varieties resistant to Fusarium that are used in other parts of the world.
