Panama: Canal Authority Calls to Save Water

13.12.2019

"Water is a challenge to remain a reliable route for our customers," said Ilya de Marotta, vice president of Traffic Business for the Panama Canal.

According to the Vice President of Traffic Business of the Panama Canal, within the Canal operation they are being creative and saving water, recycling the water in the locks without affecting shipping activities.

"We have problems with water, it has not reached 83 feet, this is a challenge that we face this summer, so the State has to focus on raising awareness of saving water. We are doing an analysis to see an order of projects", she added.

Ilya de Marotta added that they have to have state and not government policies. If there is no health and there is no education, we will not move forward.

In Marotta's opinion, the Panama Canal continues to analyse the possibility of growth even if demand has dropped worldwide.

In the last 20 years the Panama Canal has contributed more than US$15 billion to the National Treasury.

The Gatún and Alajuela reservoirs currently have only one billion cubic meters stored and should have 1,700 million cubic meters, so there is a deficit of 700 million cubic meters.
