Colombia: Additional ICA Measures to Protect Plantain and Banana Plantations

In order to protect the plantain and banana plantations of the Urabá region of the Fusarium Raza 4 Tropical, R4T, the ICA, the authorities set up three phytosanitary checkpoints to monitor the entry and exit of agricultural products, as well as the transporters, and make sure they comply with the biosecurity measures established by the entity.

The checkpoints were located in the urban area of the Antioqueños municipalities of Carepa and Mutatá, and in the municipality of Valencia, in the department of Córdoba. Likewise, work is being done on the location of 4 more posts in strategic sites that generate a positive impact on the protection of plantain and banana plantations.

The activities carried out at the checkpoints are aimed at the phytosanitary protection of the Urabá region, in order to verify the strict fulfillment of the admission requirements for musaceas propagation material, disinfection of agricultural machinery and fruit transport trucks and compliance with established protocols for producers and farm workers.

The aforementioned in the National Emergency Framework that ICA declared as sanitary and phytosanitary authority of the country for the presence of Fusarium R4T in some farms of La Guajira, and which seeks to prevent the spread of the fungus.

The ICA, in coordination with the private sector, and with the support of the Army and the National Police, works in the containment of the Fusarium in La Guajira, for which quarantine measures have been taken since June 11, 2019, date in which that the alert was activated for all plantations in the country.
