MSC: Bananas from Ecuador Consolidate their Presence in Asian Markets

23.8.2019

MSC is currently the largest carrier serving the banana industry in Ecuador, opening opportunities for small and medium-sized exporters, taking its production to new markets, particularly in Asia.

"Thanks to containerization, the Ecuadorian product is reaching new destinations with MSC as a market leader. In a trade that is competing with a closer supplier of bananas such as the Philippines. Ecuadorian bananas are gaining more acceptance every year due to their high quality," said Manuel Negrón, commercial manager of MSC Ecuador.

Historically, the banana ports of Ecuador, Puerto Bolívar and Guayaquil, handled bulk cargo, which means that the cardboard boxes containing them were loaded under the covers of conventional refrigerated vessels, so that buyers needed to charter a ship or consolidate the load to complete its capacity, which was a serious limitation for small and medium customers.

This began to change after the arrival of container ships. During the last decade, MSC initiated a dedicated container service, adding a stopover in Puerto Bolívar in 2017. The extensive network serves all the relevant ports in the world, many of them through a transhipment centre in Panama.

Currently, importers in Asia (particularly China) are buying more bananas from abroad than ever before, as an increasingly large middle class is boosting the popularity of this fruit.

MSC uses controlled atmosphere technology that allows bananas to be transported over long distances without their condition deteriorating.

Other services, such as automation, the acceleration of the publication of documentation – (including a new online services tool) and the provision of safer services with less waste, are also important to allow efficient banana exports. In 2017, MSC was certified as the most secure company to handle exports.
