Colombia: Controls Strengthened Against ‘Panama Evil’

After the declaration of a National Emergency because of the presence of Fusarium Race 4 Tropical in 6 farms in La Guajira, the ICA, the PMU, Unified Command Post and the banana and plantain production chain in Colombia have started actions aimed at containing the fungus, preventing its spread and maintaining the national production and export volumes.

For this reason, with the leadership of Agrosavia and ICA, the protocol for the importation of promising materials was designed, with potential resistance to Tropical Fusarium Race 4, according to the experiences of the countries where the fungus has been found such as Australia, the Philippines, Israel, China and Malaysia among others, which have advanced in the creation of a fungus resistant varieties.

Control Posts installed in the departments of La Guajira, El Cesar, Magdalena, and Urabá, are monitored in real time by the ICA reporting to the PMU that tracks and validates ICA's actions with banana and plant material transporters in particular said Deyanira Barrero, Manager of the ICA.

This week, with air support, verification was made of the progress of the measures and the behaviour of the fungus on the farms of La Guajira, in addition to the review with Vecol of alternatives for importing Quaternary Ammonium, with the aim of preventing the spread of the fungus Fusarium Raza 4 Tropical in the other banana crops in the country.
