Chiapas Generates 30% of Mexico’s Banana Production

28.6.2019

Chiapas generates 30% of the total national banana production and is followed by Tabasco, with 26.9% and Veracruz, with 9.3%. Mexico produces banana in 16 states from an area of more than 80,000 hectares according to figures from the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).

It is estimated that each year at least 2, 229,519 tons are harvested, with a commercial value of more than 3,000 pesos per ton, which represents nearly 7,000 million pesos, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).

These figures put Mexico in 12th place in the world for banana production, contributing 2.0% of the world supply in 2017, according to Sader.

It also points out that banana production could soon be exported to China, after its representative Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, and the deputy general commissioner of the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China, Zhang Jiwen, signed a phytosanitary requirement protocol recently.

The Secretary noted that this fact mainly benefits producers in Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz and instructed the National Service of Health, Food Safety and Quality (Senasica) to initiate the dissemination among national producers.

Therefore, it is expected that interested Chiapas producers will register their production units to be eligible and after applying the phytosanitary measures established in said protocol, technicians from the Senasica will later supervise the fruit to make sure it complies with all requirements before issuing a certificate so that their fruit can be sold to the Asian country at the end of 2019.
