Peru: Reefer Warehouse To Boost Export of Organic Bananas

21.6.2019

A new reefer warehouse will boost the export activity of organic bananas produced by the 202 members of the Association of Organic Banana Producers Valle del Chira (Aprobovchira) of the province of Sullana, Piura region.

The warehouse was obtained thanks to a business plan that was co-financed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), through the Compensation Program for Competitiveness (Agroideas).

At the ceremony held in the district of Querecotillo, the president of the Association of Organic Banana Producers Valle del Chira, Ricardo Silupu Rivera, beneficiary producers, and the national head of the Agroideas program, Jorge Amaya Castillo were present and made a tour through the facilities to appreciate the fruit’s production process.

The warehouse has the capacity to store two containers of organic bananas, i.e. about 40 tonnes. In this way, partners will reduce costs by not having to outsource the service.

This asset is part of the technology adoption business plan to which they agreed with an investment of 586,655.12 soles by Agroideas, which also included the implementation of a fertilization plan, the delivery of a truck, the construction of five packing centres, the expansion of the palletizing centre in addition to training and technical assistance.

These improvements have allowed the agrarian organization to produce up to 11 containers of organic bananas per week. Currently, Aprobovchira exports directly to the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Germany and is also certified by Global GAP and Fair Trade. In 2018 they achieved sales for US$8,687,000.
