Costa Rica: MSC Katya is the Largest Ship Ever Berthed in Moin

21.6.2019

On June 16th, the MSC Katya R. berthed at the Moin Container Terminal (TCM) and became the largest container ship that has ever docked in the ports of the Costa Rican Caribbean.

The vessel measures 281 metres long and 32.2 metres wide and can transport up to 4,200 TEUs. Until now, the maximum capacity of the vessels that arrived at Moín was 3,800 TEUs.

The MSC Katya R., coming from Ecuador and destined to Northern Europe, constitutes a new weekly direct service of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).  Central American exporters will now have the possibility to send containers to Holland, Belgium and Germany with a shorter transit time, with further connections to destinations throughout Europe.

"The new service has been designed with a focus on our customers to allow them to continue growing their businesses. From now on, our customers will benefit from direct connections to Europe, improved transit times, such as 12 days to Antwerp and 13 days to Rotterdam departing on weekends, our customers will have more days to cut their fruit fresh and transport them to the port even on days like Thursday and Friday" said MSC Costa Rica general manager Marcos Nascimento.

In this first phase, the TCM has the capacity to handle ships with up to 8,500 TEUs, thanks to the depth of the berth and the access channel.
