Spain: Eurobanan Canarias Group Reaches a Turnover of 460 M Euros

14.6.2019

The Regional Group of Cooperativas Plataneras de Canarias, Coplaca, was born in 1970 in Santa Cruz de la Palma, bringing together 12 cooperatives that produce bananas. Currently, Coplaca is made up of 16 cooperatives and agrarian transformation societies, located in each and every one of the banana producing islands, with 22 fruit processing or packing warehouses.

With the entry into force of the CMO of Banana in July 1993, Coplaca adapted its statutes and its organizational structure as an Organization of OPP Banana Growers. Subsequently, its statutes were adapted to comply with the regulations that recognize it as OPFH (Organization of Fruits and Vegetables Growers) in the year 2002.

The Coplaca Producer Organization has integrated more than 3,200 banana growers from the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera, Hierro and Gran Canaria making it the largest banana producer organization in the EU, both for the large number of producers that agglutinates and also for the volume of kilos it commercializes, which in this past  2018 was around 130.000 Tn and which let it reach a business figure of 146 million euros. The cultivated area of Plátanos reaches 3,200 ha.

Coplaca markets all its banana production through the Euroabanancanarias Group, which has a wide and extensive network of ripening and logistic centers spread across the peninsular territory.

The Eurobanancanarias Group, which was formed on July 1, 1993 and is 50% owned by Coplaca, and has become the second largest company in Spain dedicated to the commercialization and distribution of all kinds of fruit and, especially, as a leader in the maturation and sale of bananas from the Canary Islands. In 2018, the turnover of the Eurobanancanarias Group amounted to 460 million euros, of which 140 million correspond to Plátano de Canarias and the rest comes from the very large range of fruits from all origins.

Throughout 2018, the Eurobanancanarias Group has made improvements in each and every one of its centers, highlighting the acquisition of new sales positions in MercaMadrid (Eurobanan Gamero), as well as the new participation in the Grupo de Frutas SAO in Mallorca. The new ripening chambers in Barcelona were also highlighted, which ends up turning the Eurobanancanarias Group into an absolute leader in the maturity of Plátano de Canarias in the Iberian Peninsula.

In this regard, it should be noted that Canarian banana farmers, partners of Coplaca de Inversiones SL., are owners of the largest fruit trading company in Spain, Eurobanancanarias Group, obtaining dividends or profits that come not only from the sale of Plátano de Canarias but also from a wide range of products: Kiwis, Strawberries, Oranges, Apples, Avocados, Papayas, Mangos, etc.
