Canarias: Asprocan Sceptical of Forthcoming Trade Agreements from the European Union

12.4.2019

Asprocan, an entity that brings together the main banana producers' organizations in the Canary Islands has expressed its doubts on the possible liberalization of banana imports from third countries into the EU market. The company refers to the commercial agreement between the European Union and Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, since it would directly affect them as competitor producers of the product.

For this reason, it has asked the European Commission for a study of the impact it would have on the Outermost Regions and has also announced that it will address the problem at the meeting of the European Banana Joint Committee, scheduled for the coming weeks in Portugal. However, during the last week they already discussed some of these aspects with a delegation of banana producers from Madeira, who visited the archipelago with the aim of learning about their latest advances in research.

In this sense, it considers "indispensable", to prevent the Community production from disappearing, and to stop the gradual lowering of the customs tariff that, in their opinion, "has hardly any effect on the market". It also advocates imposing on the third countries signatories of the different bilateral agreements a regulation that is adapted to the real community demand and establishing a list of safe substances for all importers to comply with, as European producers do.
