12.4.2019

Between April 9th and 11th Guayaquil hosted the ninth edition of the World Banana Summit that brought together experts, companies and representatives from the banana sector to share advances in scientific solutions and innovations in equipment.

Ricardo Baquerizo, president of Expoplaza organizer of the Summit together with the Association of Graduates of Earth (Agearth) and Zamoranos del Litoral (Ageaple), explained that the summit was divided into the trade fair and scientific talks that started on April 9th with the participation of the American Patrick Huber, from the University of California, on sustainability and social responsibility.

There were 21 scientific conferences, with topics such as advances to control black sigatoka and prevent the arrival of fusarium race 4, known as Panama disease.

There were around 60 business stands offering their products. "There are new fumigation techniques, drones that are used for certain areas near rivers where they must be more efficient," said Baquerizo.

Among the findings it was mentioned that banana leaves are replacing the use of plastic in Vietnam and Thailand. A supermarket in Thailand started using large leaves from banana plants to package the products it sells, replacing the use of plastic bags. Other supermarkets in the Vietnamese cities of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and Hanoi emulated the use of the organic substitute for plastic.

If the use of banana leaves means that there is a little less plastic in the supermarkets, it is a positive change! ", According to connoisseurs, although organic banana leaves would be preferable, they added.

One of the food store chains already plans to extend the use of the banana leaves to all its branches in the country.
