Canary Islands: Bananas Production Increase Foresee for 2019

15.2.2019

Asprocan anticipates that the trend towards a more tropical climate will continue throughout 2019, which would result in an increase in production and, therefore, the need to seek new international markets to sell the surplus.

To this end and apart from small quantities that were sold last year in Switzerland and Germany, the association will continue to strengthen the Moroccan market, which lacks production at certain times of the year.

"The objective in these markets is that they can absorb the volumes that the domestic market cannot receive and which cannot be commercialized in European markets", highlights Asprocan, adding that "the objective is to work on all the possible lines of action to stabilize the national market and, as a whole, to give as much certainty as possible to the banana production".

The sector reminded of the need to be "aware" that the European market is traditionally dominated by large banana operators and that presents "certain difficulties" for the Canarian banana such as price, volume, stability of shipments and low tolerance.

This implies that, in the case of the Canarian banana, only small volumes that are the result of a selection process among the higher categories are able to be commercialized, apart from the fact that an investment in communication and differentiation of the product is required at the point of sale that justifies the price differential for the consumer.

As a result, Asprocan partners have agreed on an internationalization strategy for Plátano de Canarias, which includes joint actions and measures to support the OPPs that decide to undertake export projects to new markets.
