Germany: Lidl Demands the End of the Price War

25.1.2019

Since October Lidl sells only fair trade bananas because other supermarket chains offer bananas significantly cheaper, the price pressure for Lidl is high.

Lidl purchasing chief Jan Bock now calls the trade to follow suit. "For a long-term improvement in living and working conditions in the banana-growing countries, the entire trade must pull together, so we appeal to the industry, responsible for the assortment and pricing policy," Bock said to the German press. In the interests of banana producers, a rethinking of trade must now take place."

Low prices cannot be the solution, and we stand by our promise to growers, we're switching to 100 percent and Fairtrade only, said Bock.

Before switching to fair-trade bananas, Lidl had long-standing bananas from the less demanding "Rainforest Alliance" label, which also includes Aldi, Edeka and Netto. Whether they want to convert COMPLETE to fair trade bananas, Aldi and Co. did not answer. Development Minister Gerd Müller (CSU) spoke of an "enormous signal". Müller to BILD: "Lidl is now a pioneer in Germany, now the entire retail trade must follow suit and ensure that child labor has no place in German supermarkets."

Who buys the kilo of bananas for 89 cents, must know that the peasants receive starvation wages, that needs to change! "According to the Development Ministry, bananas are still too often used as a cheap lure of supermarkets and 9 out of 10 bananas are sold below value. In the UK, all supermarkets switched to "fairtrade bananas" ten years ago. Banana is the world's most consumed fruit, every German eats on average about 11 kilos of bananas a year. The main importing countries are Colombia, Costa Rica and Ecuador. Due to price pressure, however, many small farmers gave up.

Since the announcement by Lidl to increase the purchase price for bananas, there is a price war in German trade, which will be held at the expense of the banana producers.
