Banana Export Ecuador 2018 Exceeds Expectations

25.1.2019

Ecuadorian banana exports exceeded expectations in 2018 and the association of exporters AEBE announced that 344.8 million boxes of 18.15 kg were exported, representing an increase of 21 million boxes and 6 percent compared to 2017.

Banana exports generated a total of about 2.739 billion dollars according to the Central Bank of the Andean country. This result was mainly due to the sales to the EU.

However, according to AEBE, the following markets experienced a decline in sales: Russia (-1.09%); South America, (-7.63%); EFTA (-15.68%) and Oceania (-6.73%).  Trade decrease in South America was caused by the economic troubles caused by the Peso devaluation against the USD in Argentina, which led to a significant drop in exports.

The market in Asia grew strongly in 2018 mainly due to a 60% rise in demand in China, which more than offset the export decline to Japan, according to AEBE.
