Costa Rica: Dole Closes Operations and Dismisses more than 200 People in Limón

Before the start of operations of the new Container Terminal in Moin (TCM), Dole Foods has reported the closure of operations in the province of Limón affecting 240 people.

Through a document, the company reported the closure of operations of the Terminal and Workshop Department of Standard Fruit Company of Costa Rica SA, a subsidiary of the American multinational, since the container service functions will be carried out within the integral tariff charged by the concessionaire APM.

Likewise, they pointed out that other operations "ceased to be profitable due to the severe decrease as a result of the public concession granted by the State."

"Due to the above, as of this date the work center called "Terminal and Workshop" has been closed.

The Company will recognize one additional month to the benefits of law (unemployment and notice) that corresponds to each worker. The letter of termination of employment contract, as well as the sheet of settlement of benefits and the corresponding check, will be available and will be delivered to each of the workers, in a location in front of the Courts of Limón center, from 11 am on Thursday, January 24, 2019.

Dole generates more than 7,500 jobs in Costa Rica and has farms in Sarapiquí, Pococí, San Carlos and Limón.

It should be mentioned that Standard Fruit Company S.A. appeared on the Treasury list, as one of the large companies that reported losses or zero profits. In the case of this company, it had losses for six years (from 2008 to 2014 consecutively).
