18.1.2019

30 days after the first harvest of export bananas from the banana plantations in Puerto Armuelles, district of Barú, province of Chiriquí, the President of the Republic, Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez, inspected for the crops on the Jobito farm, accompanied by executives from the Banapiña company and state ministers.

Varela said that Chiriqui will now add bananas to its wide offer of agricultural products, the activity had declined in this very productive area of the country over the last two decades.

The sublease contract of more than 1,600 farms for banana reactivation in Barú exceeds US$13 million.

The agreement, lasting 20 years with the option to renew for an amount of 9.9 million balboas, establishes farms in Mango and Jobito, which will be the first areas to start production and export of fruit.

With the reactivation of the banana area, the generation of 3,100 direct jobs and 12,000 indirect jobs in commerce and services is expected. It is estimated that the company will invest more than 100 million balboas in a period of seven years.

During his visit the President was able to see the construction of a banana packing plant that will be of great importance for the export process which could include women of the district in the production.

It is estimated that the company Banapiña S.A. will cultivate about 900 hectares each year, with an average annual productivity of 2,725 boxes of bananas per hectare.
