Peru: El Niño Development Announced

11.1.2019

The director of the zonal Senamhi Piura, Jorge Luis Carranza, said that we are already facing an El Niño (FEN) phenomenon of slight intensity and the rains may start to appear more steadily this summer.

"We have already switched from surveillance to the presence of El Niño. They were three consecutive months in which surface temperatures of the sea (SST) were higher than normal. The variation goes from 0.7 degrees to 0.9 degrees above normal," he said.

Carranza said that in January, February and March there will be rain from normal to higher, although in the month of March there could be focal events of extreme rains that could cause havoc because the basins will be full by then.

However, he stressed that no preparations have been made for the occurrence of an El Niño phenomenon like the one that happened in the years 1983, 1998 or 2017.

"The current El Niño is not about a coastal phenomenon like the one in 2017, where the warming of the sea occurred in the region between Colombia and Ecuador, and then it moved to Peru," he reported.

Carranza noted that on January 8th, at 5.30 in the morning it rained in Tumbes, Puerto Pizarro and Matapalo which corresponds to Senamhi’s forecast.

He also pointed out that there were rains in the Piura Mountains, especially in Ayabaca, Huarcuy, Paimas and Canchaque.
