DP WORLD IN ECUADOR JOINS THE LARGEST CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE ON THE PLANET

2022-07-16

BASED ON THE 2030 AGENDA AND THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

On July 14th, 2022, in the city of Guayaquil, DP World in Ecuador signed its adhesion to the United Nations Global Compact - Ecuadorian Network, with the aim of continuing its active business contribution and to generate a more sustainable and inclusive economy, reflecting on the ten principles universally accepted by more than 13,000 companies and organizations in the world (330 Ecuadorian) belonging to the Pact in four thematic areas: human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.

This important milestone comes after almost 2 months since DP World has been recognized internationally for its emblematic project of planting 100 hectares of mangrove called "Sembrando Vida", the same one that is executed in Guayaquil, city where its Deep-Water Port Terminal operates.

"For DP World it is essential to align its business strategies with the principles of the Global Compact and, thus, strengthen the work that has been done on our 3 focal pillars, which are gender equality, quality education and water care," said Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Ecuador.

Jorge Rosillo, president of Global Compact Ecuador, expressed his congratulations to DP World in Ecuador "for its firm commitment to the Ten Principles of the Global Compact and for the actions they carry out for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Welcome to the United Nations Global Compact, a movement of organizations committed to a better world."

With this adhesion to the Global Compact, the Guayaquil port of DP World in Posorja advances in its objective of becoming a reference, at the local and regional level, in actions that seek to maximize the impact of its projects, thanks to the scope of broadcasting and strategic allies that this initiative covers.

SOME OF DP WORLD IN ECUADOR'S SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMS

EDUCATION “First University in Posorja”

Through the agreement signed in 2020 between ESPOL, DP World and the Municipality of Guayaquil, work is being done to develop the first university in Posorja to generate technical and technological profiles with the knowledge for all logistics and industrial activities.

In a joint effort with allied companies and the university, they developed the dual methodology that will allow students to exercise the practical part of their studies within the companies in the area.

  • 1.400 pre-registered (60% female).
  • All aim to obtain one of the 40 scholarships with which this university will start this year.

ENVIRONMENT “Sembrando Vida / Sowing Life”

Through this project, more than 65 hectares have been planted on the Island of Puná in Guayaquil, with the permanent objective of creating blue carbon ecosystems through mangroves in Ecuador and contributing to the mitigation of greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions.

DP World employees, volunteers and inhabitants of the area will participate in the sowing sessions. This year, this outstanding program received the most important sustainability award in the port industry, the IAPH SUTAINABILITY AWARDS 2022, in the ‘climate and energy’ category.

  • More than 150.000 red mangrove seedlings sowed in the first 65 hectares
  • The goal is to overcome 100 HECTARES of red mangroves
