Colombia: Insecurity and Strikes Affect the Banana Industry in Magdalena

2024-03-15

Insecurity and strikes in Colombia have affected the productivity of the banana sector. According to José Francisco Zúñiga, president of Asbama, these factors resulted in the sector growth of only 1.8% in 2023 instead of the expected 5%. During the strike in La Guajira, around 200,000 boxes of bananas were stopped from being exported. In addition, the presence of illegal groups has increased, threatening workers and transporters in the sector. The banana sector has fully supported the Army, the police, and the competent authorities to address these security problems.

Additionally, illicit container contamination remains a concern. Banana marketing companies have been declared victims of criminal gangs. Security measures such as monitoring centres on the farms, GPS on the trucks, and controls at the port have been implemented. Finally, European Union supermarkets' decisions to reduce the purchase price per exported box have put the Colombian banana sector at a crossroads. Despite the difficulties, the industry is willing to reinforce what is necessary but asks for better banana payments.
