Cameroon and the EU Conclude Banana Support Program

2026-10-02

Cameroon and the EU marked the end of the Banana Accompanying Measures Program (MAB) at a final evaluation workshop in Yaoundé on September 23, 2026. Paul Tasong, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy, Planning, and Regional Development (MINEPAT), and EU Ambassador to Cameroon Veronika Boskovic Pohar co-chaired the event with other sector partners. The EU financed the program, which began in 2013 under the Cameroon-EU cooperation framework. Over ten years it provided more than 31 billion FCFA (about €47 million) in grants to modernise infrastructure, buy modern equipment and raise plantation productivity. A large share paid for international certification, which helped exports meet global standards, improved working conditions and preserved rural jobs.

Workforce training and capacity-building were central to the program. They benefited both major producers and collective initiatives led by the Banana Association of Cameroon (ASSOBACAM). The workshop reviewed the program's technical, economic, social and environmental achievements. MINEPAT pledged to consolidate these gains and set future priorities for bananas, one of Cameroon's leading non-oil agricultural exports and a key source of foreign exchange. Officials linked the results to the goals of the National Development Strategy 2030 (SND30): structural transformation, growth in productive sectors and job creation. They called the program evidence of a strong Cameroon-EU partnership.
