2026-07-10

The Moín Container Terminal (TCM) in Costa Rica has announced a plan to invest USD 7.1 million in 2026 to improve its operational capacity, advance technological innovation, and enhance operational sustainability. Costa Rican foreign trade is experiencing significant growth.

In May 2026, TCM reported its highest-ever operational volume, totalling 64,722 container movements, including 20,069 export movements. This strong performance reflects the success of the export sectors utilising the terminal to access international markets.

According to data from the Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX), Costa Rican exports continued to trend positively in the first quarter of 2026, with the agricultural sector generating USD 1.354 billion in exports—a 12% increase. This growth is primarily driven by products such as pineapples, bananas, and green coffee. Other sectors, including medical devices, electronics, food processing, metalworking, and the chemical-pharmaceutical industry, also grew.

"Growth in foreign trade requires a modern and efficient logistics infrastructure that can meet the needs of exporters and importers. These investments will enhance our operational and technological capabilities, thereby contributing to Costa Rica's competitiveness and economic development," stated Natalia Picado, Commercial Director of TCM.

The USD 7.1 million investment will be allocated as follows: USD 2.4 million for civil infrastructure, USD 3.5 million for operational equipment, and USD 1.1 million for technology and innovation.

These funds will be used to strengthen the terminal's operational capacity, optimise cargo and vehicle flows, incorporate new equipment, promote process automation, and continue modernising the technological infrastructure that supports foreign trade operations. Specific initiatives include improving infrastructure, upgrading equipment, enhancing security, adopting new technologies, and implementing projects to increase operational efficiency and resilience.

Furthermore, TCM is dedicated to sustainability through investments that enhance operational efficiency and support the development of modern logistics in the country. The integration of modern infrastructure, technology, and operational efficiency has positioned TCM as a strategic platform for logistics and trade in Costa Rica.
