The Association of Banana Growers of Magdalena and La Guajira (Asbama) is urging all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the banana sector, crucial for formal employment and rural development in the Colombian Caribbean. 

Executive President José Francisco Zúñiga Cotes states that while producers are improving their environmental, social, and labour practices to meet international market demands, they still face challenges. He emphasises that the costs of sustainable production are not reflected in market prices. 

"Sustainability isn't built on speeches; it requires viable conditions," he said. The banana industry supports over 19,500 direct formal jobs and around 450 small producers, making it vital for economic development in the region. 

Zúñiga highlighted social investments by producers in housing, education, and infrastructure, which enhance community well-being. However, economic challenges, including declining prices and rising costs, threaten the sector's resilience.

He calls for equitable trade relations and recognition of producers' efforts to promote sustainable practices. Zúñiga believes that banana cultivation will remain essential for economic and social stability as long as producers can stay competitive. Fair pricing, he concludes, is key to protecting employment and ensuring the future of this vital industry in Colombia.
