Port of Vigo Begins Demolition of Old Cement Silos at Guixar Terminal

2026-03-20

The Port of Vigo is set to begin demolishing eight old cement silos at the Guixar container terminal, freeing up over 6,000 square meters of space to enhance efficiency. This initiative aims to address the recent surge in containerised fruit traffic.

The project includes a tender for the demolition and adaptation of the esplanade, scheduled for April, with an estimated budget of 1.5 million euros. Port sources state that this development is a significant step in modernising infrastructure to support continued growth and competitiveness.

The silos will be fully emptied by June or July, with demolition expected to finish by the end of summer. This effort aligns with the terminal's plan to improve logistics, as fruit traffic increased by 71% in February alone.

The demolition is part of a larger reorganization plan spearheaded by the Port Authority, which will also see the completion of a new container depot. The newly available space is essential for the construction of a new Border Control Post (PCF), which will enhance inspection services and foreign trade agility.

Last year, Guixar became Spain's leading terminal for fresh fruit traffic, handling over 212,000 tonnes. To support this growth, Termavi, the terminal's concessionaire, has invested 18 million euros in recent years and plans to increase refrigeration capacity by 40% by 2025, reinforcing the Port of Vigo's leadership in this vital sector.
