Paraguay Projected Banana Exports to Reach USD 35 Million This Year

2025-07-25

In the first half of the year, Paraguay reported banana exports totalling $15 million. This has led to optimistic forecasts predicting that total exports could reach $35 million by the end of 2025, according to Francisco Paniagua, a technical specialist at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG). He noted that producers are benefiting from the Zero Hunger Program implemented in schools, which has boosted sales.

Caaguazú is the leading department for banana production, with 90% of the output concentrated in the Tembiaporã district, which encompasses 9,000 hectares of plantations. Following Caaguazú are San Pedro with 2,000 hectares, Cordillera with 1,800 hectares, and Alto Paraná (including Mbarakayú and Itakyry), which collectively contribute to a national total of 12,000 hectares.

Argentina is the primary export market for Paraguayan bananas, followed by Chile, which has stringent requirements for traceability. Other export markets include Brazil, Uruguay, Canada, Belgium, Spain, Poland, Sweden, and Japan.
