Fresh Del Monte's Zero Pineapple: A Sustainable Choice
2025-07-11
Fresh Del Monte's carbon neutral Zero pineapple exemplifies the company's commitment to sustainability, featuring an eye-catching black tag and third-party certification for sustainable growth. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and includes efforts such as using reusable containers for packing bananas in North America.
Ana Cristina Fonseca, VP of Product Management for North America, emphasised that sustainability has been a core value of Del Monte from the outset.
The Zero Pineapple was created to address consumer concerns about the environmental impacts of pineapple production in Costa Rica.
"Our mission is to turn sustainability into action and provide consumers with a truly climate-conscious pineapple, from farm to table," she stated.
The carbon neutrality of Zero Pineapple extends from sustainable farming practices to a completely eco-friendly supply chain.
The pineapples are third-party certified by SCS Global Services, ensuring that they meet sustainability standards. This certification is prominently displayed on the product's black tag, helping consumers make informed choices while justifying the higher price tag, which reflects the cost of certification and the implementation of sustainable practices.
Currently, Fresh Del Monte offers about 1 million boxes of its Zero pineapple annually, with plans to expand its supply in the coming years. The Zero Pineapple is just one aspect of the company's broader sustainability efforts, which include educating children on reforestation and reducing waste through upcycling initiatives.
