Peru: Maersk Launches Integrated Packing and Cold Storage Centre

2025-07-11

AP Moller–Maersk (Maersk) has officially inaugurated its new logistics centre for packing and cold chain operations in Olmos, Peru. As Peru's fresh fruit exports continue to rise, driven by global demand, this facility is designed to deliver speed and freshness from the field to the port.

Located in the Lambayeque region, Olmos has quickly become one of Peru's most dynamic agricultural zones. According to Peru's National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), Lambayeque is now a leading contributor to the country's fruit exports, which grew in 2024, including a 35.7% increase in blueberry exports and a 29.2% increase in avocado exports.

"This Packing and Cold Storage Center in Olmos represents much more than a logistics investment—it's a strategic commitment to the long-term growth of northern Peru's agro-export sector. By operating in Olmos, we empower local producers to compete globally with the speed and quality that today's markets demand. Our decision was based on the region's strong export performance, proximity to key plantations, and the clear need for integrated cold chain infrastructure to unlock its potential fully," said Dean Rodin, Managing Director for South America's West Coast at Maersk.

The 17,500-square-meter facility is the first of its kind in northern Peru, offering comprehensive cold chain services from harvest to export. It's designed to handle the entire post-harvest process of three main fruits: avocado, blueberry, and mango, covering field collection, processing, packing, cold storage, and final dispatch to port.

It can also serve as a cold storage solution for packaged products, such as grapes, allowing for greater flexibility in seasonal exports.

The terminal can process up to:

  • 38 tons/hour for avocados and mangoes
  • 4.5 tons/hour for blueberries
  • It also stores over 4,600 containers in refrigerated and climate-controlled rooms, as well as two chambers for finished goods with 2,088 pallet positions.

Additional features include:

  • Seven rapid cooling tunnels with 18 positions each
  • Specialised pre-cooling systems for blueberries
  • Five loading docks
  • An on-site depot with 420 container slots and 210 connection points
